Colored Rice

An indoor morning because the day started off cool and grey.

We made 4 batches of colored rice for the girls to play with.
I found the instructions online and used a 5 lb bag
of the cheapest rice we could find in the supermarket.
We put about 4 cups of rice in a big ziptop bag,
added 1 tsp of vinegar and some food coloring
and the girls each got a bag of different colored rice
to shake and mix. Then we spread the rice
on baking trays and dried them for half an hour in a 200F oven.

Each girl picked a color of rice she liked
and poured it into a flat tub.
For the next half an hour they were occupied with
scooping, pouring and decorating the kitchen floor
while I had a leisurely lunch. When they were done,
Jenna looked at the mess they had made and started
to sweep the floor. She ended up pushing some of the rice
under the fridge and oven but at least she was trying to clean up!

We stored the rice in separate bags for the next indoor day.
Cleaning up was a cinch compared to when the girls
are out playing with their sand table!
